The Coverciano Football Museum has played host to an important event that will usher in a new era for Serie A Women. The meeting, which was organised by the FIGC and Serie A Women, also included the AIA - the Italian Referees’ Association - and representatives of each of the 12 top-flight clubs as guests.

At the centre of the discussion was Football Video Support (FVS), the tool developed by FIFA to aid referees and ensure more fairness in matches.

And so, Serie A Women will be - along with other leagues, notably in Spain and America - a pioneer in the experimental adoption of the technology.

HOW DOES FOOTBALL VIDEO SUPPORT WORK?

The mechanism is clear. Coaches will be able to request a review of no more than twice per game, calling on the referee to review the situation in question. The request will be made by a hand gesture - a rotation of the index finger - while handing a card to the fourth official.

Then, the referee will consult a pitchside monitor to review the incident.

The cases that can be analysed are:

  • Goal-related episodes;
  • The awarding/non-awarding of a penalty;
  • Direct red cards;
  • Mistaken identity.

Should the request lead to the referee opting to change their initial decision, the request will not be used up, with the idea being to encourage informed use of the resource.

The new 2025/26 Serie A Women season begins on the weekend of October 4-5, 2025.
