Before kick-off at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Sevilla, Athletic and supporters delivered a moving tribute to the victims of recent railway accidents.
According to El Correo, the remembrance honoured those who died in Adamuz, Córdoba, and the Rodalies trainee driver killed in Gélida, Catalonia, who was a Sevilla member and supporters’ club member.
As across all Liga grounds this weekend, a minute’s silence was observed. Sevilla felt it keenly, as one of the victims was a club member. The home players took the field wearing black armbands in tribute to Fernando Huerta Jiménez.
During the silence, the big screens showed the image of the trainee driver wearing a Sevilla shirt. On the touchline, 40 members of the Triana Fans supporters’ club formed a line in white shirts. When the minute ended, they embraced, many in tears.
Sevilla and Athletic thus added their support to the many expressions of solidarity across Spanish football and wider society for those affected by the tragedies.
