Antonio Cordon has dismissed the prospect of Sevilla re-signing Sergio Ramos as a player, despite late-window talk of a short-term solution to their defensive problems.

“The only option was to sign a striker – Maupay – , but they have exhausted the money for registering players. This is the reality of Sevilla right now; there is no practical possibility of signing anyone else.” he told Cadena SER.

Speculation resurfaced after Monday’s 4-1 defeat at RCD Mallorca, which left Sevilla with the division’s worst defensive record, 37 conceded in 22 games, and only two points above the relegation zone. “The transfer market is just as important as having the whole group committed to accumulating points to overcome this difficult situation. There are ten teams within five points, so the fight is going to be very tough.”

“[Almeyda is] The coach the club needs at this specific moment and given the current circumstances. [I have] Full confidence in a born worker who has created a very positive atmosphere within the group.”

Ramos is leading a consortium in a reported €400m bid to buy the club and has been granted an exclusivity period for due diligence. He is a free agent after leaving Rayados de Monterrey in December and is supposedly looking to return to European football. Sevilla host Girona and Alaves before visiting Getafe, then close the month with the Seville derby at Real Betis, a run that could shape Almeyda’s future.
