Sheffield United came from behind late on to defeat Hull City 2-1 at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The visitors took the lead early on through former Blade Oli McBurnie who finished a neat move with a placed effort under Adam Davies at the Kop end. But the Blades found an equaliser from the penalty spot through Gustavo Hamer in the final ten minutes. And with moments to spare, substitute Danny Ings was in the right place to poke the ball home beyond the Hull keeper to complete the turnaround.
Blades: A. Davies, Tanganga, Hamer, O’Hare (Chong 63), Brooks, Burrows, McGuinness (Ings 86), Seriki (Hoever 63), Peck (Riedewald 71), Bamford, Rothwell.
Unused: Faxon, Arblaster, Hjelde, Bindon, Cannon.
Hull: Pandur, Coyle, Lundstram, Ajayi, Millar (Gelhardt 71), McBurnie (Hughes 87), Belloumi (Joseph 71), Egan, Drameh (McNair 20), Hadziahmetovic (Dowell 87), Crooks.
Unused: Phillips, Jacob, Gyabi, McCarthy.
Hull City stunned the home supporters inside five minutes when Oli McBurnie gave the visitors the lead. Latching onto a neat pass from Liam Millar, McBurnie slipped a clever near-post finish beyond the goalkeeper.
Hull started brightly and looked the more dangerous side in the opening stages. John Lundstram tested the keeper with a driven effort, while Millar curled narrowly over as the visitors pushed for a second. McBurnie nearly doubled his tally with an acrobatic attempt, only to be denied by a heroic goal-line header from Mark McGuinness.
Gradually, United began to grow into the contest. They ended the first half strongly, though Hull still posed a threat on the counter. Adam Davies had to react quickly to deny Belloumi when he broke through on goal. At the other end, Patrick Bamford had a chance following a swift break from a Hull corner, while Andre Brooks will feel he should have done better when he headed wide at the back post from Harrison Burrows’ inviting delivery. Sydie Peck also went close, seeing his effort deflected behind for a corner as United turned up the pressure.
The turning point came with 15 minutes remaining. Former Blade Lundstram, already on a booking, was shown a second yellow card and dismissed.
Moments later, Riedewald was brought down inside the penalty area by Kyle Joseph, adding further tension to an already heated contest. Tempers flared, with John Egan and Pandur both entering the referee’s notebook as the match edged towards its climax.
Then came the breakthrough United had been pushing for. Gustavo Hamer stepped up in front of the Kop and coolly levelled.
With the atmosphere now electric, United sensed an opportunity and they seized it. Substitute Danny Ings, on the pitch for only a matter of minutes, made an immediate impact. Meeting a pinpoint cross from Japhet Tanganga, Ings slid home the winner to complete a remarkable comeback in the final ten minutes.
