The Blades are set to hand Gus Hamer and Tyrese Campbell new deals

Sheffield United want to enter contract talks with both Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell as they look to secure their long-term futures before the players reach the final year of their contracts.

The Sheffield Star have reported that Chris Wilder has 'pushed the button' with the representatives of both star players to see whether the duo would be interested in signing new deals.

The Blades have recently seen the likes of Iliman Ndiaye, Sander Berge, and, this past summer, Anel Ahmedhodzic, sold for cut prices because they were in the final year of their deals, and didn't want to lose them on a free transfer months later.

With 18 months remaining on both Hamer and Campbell's contracts, Sheffield United are keen to ensure the same transfer nightmare doesn't repeat itself.

Sheffield United want to extend Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell's contracts

According to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield United has contacted the representatives of both Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell to discuss extending their contracts, as both players areset to be out of contract at the end of next season.

Both have been key parts of Chris Wilder's side in the Championship both last season and this, once the boyhood Blade boss made his return to the dugout in September.

Hamer was named the Player of the Season in the Championship last year at the EFL Awards, while Campbell's first campaign at Bramall Lane saw him net 11 goals, including one in the play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May.

The frontman is well on his way to equalling and even exceeding that tally this season, and while Hamer's 2025/26 season has been a bit stop-start due to injury, he's shown glimpses of that quality when he has been fit. Therefore, it's a no-brainer that Chris Wilder wants them both tied down to new deals.

"I've pushed that button already on those players," Wilder said. We don't want to lose players to frees.

"Unfortunately, sometimes they run it down, and that's difficult. Then, you think there has to be a succession plan in terms of where you work off the back of that, but we've already pushed that button with Gus' and Ty's agent, and seen what the feedback and enthusiasm is back off them."

Both Campbell and Hamer will have ambitions of playing in the Premier League, and after Sheffield United's dire start to the current campaign, there may not have been much of a surprise if they refused to sign new terms and looked to force an exit in the summer.

However, the Blades have picked up the 10th-most points in the Championship since Chris Wilder was re-hired, and the competitiveness of the second tier this season means that a run to the top six isn't out of the question.

"I like to think there will be [enthusiasm] from the players' point of view, in terms of us being ambitious and trying to win games and improve our league position and ultimately what happens off the back of that," Wilder continued.

"I'm sure if you speak to the boys, they enjoy their football, they enjoy what it's all about, the environment, the culture, the togetherness of the football club, which you can see growing.

"Obviously, results help, and players see that we're a progressive football club. It's been a difficult start to the season, but we're doing our best to reset and move it forward.

"They're popular players with the supporters, and they've got to keep producing those performances that we know they've got inside them."

Gustavo Hamer and Tyrese Campbell contract extensions would provide a huge boost for Sheffield United

Tying down Hamer and Campbell would be huge for Sheffield United, not just in the long term, but also in the short term, as it shows that they're still serious about promotion this season.

With both players wanting to test themselves among the best in the country, choosing to remain at Bramall Lane would confirm that they believe they can do it with their current club.

This may then help Chris Wilder's side improve further in the upcoming January transfer window and bring in the players required to give Sheffield United a needed boost in their late charge towards the top six.

So, not only do new deals for Hamer and Campbell ensure that the Blades aren't in a position where they are forced to sell next summer, but it also puts them in good standing to make a fist of promotion in the second half of the campaign.
