Sheffield Wednesday have discussed the possibility of bringing Jamie Vardy back to English football, The Wednesday Word reports. The talks are said to have been raised among senior figures as the Owls plan for League One after relegation from the Championship.

Last week, Gazzetta dello Sport suggested a return to Leicester might appeal to Vardy, but his wife Rebekah called that “fake news”. Wednesday’s mooted approach is presented as interest from the club side rather than chatter around the player.

Any switch to another third-tier side appears unlikely given Leicester City, widely regarded as Vardy’s spiritual home, will also be in League One. The prospect of him turning out elsewhere in the division seems highly implausible.

Vardy was released by Wednesday at 16 years old, then rebuilt his career in non-league before joining Fleetwood Town. Leicester signed him from Fleetwood, and he scored 200 goals in 500 games before moving to Italy after 11 years.

He is now with Cremonese in Serie A and completes his first season this weekend. Even a win over Como might not be enough to keep his current club in the top flight.
