The Owls have suffered much torment throughout 2025 due to previous chief Dejphon Chansiri’s financial woes, which saw players not paid on time for five of the last seven months of his reign.

Players exiting the club for free and multiple embargoes severely hampered Wednesday in the summer transfer window and eventually came to a head when Chansiri was forced to place the Owls into administration after failing to satisfy a £1m bill owed to HMRC.

With multiple names circling to become Wednesday’s next owner, Football League World has rounded up the latest news on that front.

One major figure who has been linked with taking over the Owls is Mike Ashley, who previously owned Newcastle United.

The 61-year-old was initially linked with Wednesday by journalist Alan Biggs and it has now been reported that he is eyeing up a £10m bid to try and get a takeover done quickly.

It’s now stated by the Guardian that Ashley holds a key advantage in the race to become the next Wednesday owner, due to the fact that he is able to demonstrate proof of £50m funds and that he is a known entity within the EFL.

With these factors in mind, the former Newcastle United chief currently looks like one of the most likely candidates to lead Sheffield Wednesday forward into the future.

John Textor is another name that has long been linked with taking over at Hillsborough, after leaving his position as a stakeholder at Crystal Palace during the summer.

It has been revealed that the US businessman has held talks with administrators over a potential deal for the Owls, which signifies his intent to take over the club.

However, journalist Alan Nixon recently reported that Textor has also explored the opportunity of investing in Derby County, which would rule out any involvement with Wednesday.

Despite this, Nixon also states that a move to take over the Steel City side is still Textor’s preferred choice, with the Rams something to fall back on at this moment in time.

After Wednesday were placed into administration, interest immediately ramped up in taking over the club once parties knew that they wouldn’t be dealing with Chansiri.

Journalist Rob Statton has revealed that the number of groups eyeing up a takeover at Hillsborough goes into double figures, with US Billionaire John McEvoy included in that list.

McEvoy made his money in the world of telecommunication and is a minority investor in both the Nashville Predators and the Colorado Rockies, who compete in the NHL and MLB, respectively.

He also has a minority stake in a talent agency known as Various Artists Management, which has Sheffield-based band Reverend and the Makers on their roster.
