Shelbourne FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Seán Russell as Manager of our Women’s Senior Team.
Russell joins the Reds following an impressive spell in charge of Treaty United, where he led the club to its strongest season to date in the Women’s Premier Division, delivering a record points total and guiding the Limerick side to an FAI Cup semi-final.
A former League of Ireland player whose professional career was cut short by injury, Russell transitioned quickly and successfully into coaching. He served within Treaty United’s academy before stepping into senior management, and has built a reputation as an organised, meticulous coach with a strong track record in player development.
A Dublin native, Russell played professionally with Louisville City in the United States and brings extensive League of Ireland experience. He previously enjoyed a short spell at Tolka Park with the Reds in 2014, and also played with UCD, Limerick, Longford Town and Drogheda United.
Russell will immediately begin preparations for the upcoming season, with backroom staff updates to follow.
Speaking on his appointment, Russell said: “I am honoured to be joining Shelbourne Football Club as the Women’s Head Coach. Shels are a massive club and I will be doing everything I can to take the team right to the top of Irish football where it belongs. I want to engage everybody from players to fans to create something special here. Our ambition is to be right at the top, playing an exciting style of football that everyone connected to the club can be proud of.”
Luke Byrne, Shelbourne FC Technical Director, said: “Seán is a very professional and ambitious young coach who aligns with our vision for our women’s team. We were very impressed with the job he did at Treaty United, where he played an attractive, progressive style of football with a focus on player development. You could see clearly how he wanted his teams to play and how well the players knew their roles within that. I am looking forward to working closely with Seán to ensure we have a strong, driven squad capable of winning trophies this season and beyond. Welcome back to the Reds, Seán!”
Tomás Quinn, Shelbourne FC CEO, said: “We are delighted to welcome Seán to Shelbourne FC as Manager of our Women’s First Team. He brings a passion and ambition that aligns perfectly with our vision for the women’s game at the club. Shelbourne has a proud history of success in women’s football, and we believe Seán is the right person to build on that legacy and lead us into an exciting new chapter. On behalf of everyone at the club, I’d like to wish him every success as we continue to grow and strengthen our women’s programme both on and off the pitch.”
