According to Glorioso 1904, Silvino Louro died on Thursday aged 67 after a long illness, leaving Portuguese football in mourning. The former Portugal international was best known for his years at Benfica.
Across 10 seasons with the Lisbon club, he made 258 appearances and helped win four league titles, two Portuguese Cups and one Super Cup. He became a benchmark presence between the posts.
He departed Benfica in 1995 to join Porto. Louro also represented hometown side Vitória de Setúbal, as well as Aves and Salgueiros, where he ended his playing career.
After hanging up his gloves, he moved into coaching as a goalkeeping specialist, forging a long association with José Mourinho. The pair worked together at Porto, then at Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United.
More recently he coached in Africa with Al-Hilal Omdurman in Sudan in 2021. He had been out of the game since, a period marked by health issues.
Benfica paid tribute, describing him as a defining figure of his generation who honoured the badge, and praising his dedication, professionalism and goalkeeping quality. The club offered its condolences to his family and friends.
