Simon Adingra will return to Sunderland for pre-season after AS Monaco declined their buy option, while FC Porto have joined the race for Eliezer Mayenda ahead of 2026/27.

Monaco confirmed on Monday they would not sign the winger after his half-season loan. Adingra moved there on deadline day, a deal that cleared the way for Sunderland to bring in Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht.

He started brightly and featured regularly, but inconsistency and Monaco’s failure to qualify for the Champions League are thought to have influenced the call. He made 17 appearances with three goals and two assists. Ivory Coast face Norway in the World Cup last 32 on Tuesday at 6pm UK time.

Régis Le Bris will now have four senior left wingers, with Angulo, Chemsdine Talbi and Romaine Mundle also available. Mundle is expected to be fit for the start of pre-season after a hamstring issue, though like Adingra his future is uncertain. Sunderland must choose between reintegrating Adingra or arranging a loan or permanent exit.

Porto are the latest suitors for Mayenda, though claims a deal was close were swiftly played down in Portugal. Stade Rennais have held initial talks and several clubs remain in the frame. Mayenda is thought to prefer a permanent move to secure minutes given Brian Brobbey’s form, and Sunderland are unlikely to stand in his way, with a sale potentially delivering a major profit in cash and SCR terms after a fee just under £1 million in 2023.
