Sunderland are planning a measured summer, seeking select upgrades to a Premier League squad reshaped under Regis Le Bris.
A year on from Wembley’s win over Sheffield United that ended a nine-year exile, Granit Xhaka, Robin Roefs, Omar Alderete and Brian Brobbey are now mainstays. TransferMarkt says Lecce and Tiago Gabriel hold options to extend his 2027 deal by two years.
Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney, long admired and the subject of late January interest from Nottingham Forest, could be available with Boro staying in the Championship. Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu, capped 22 times by Germany Under-21s, has been linked with Manchester United and Inter and may be attainable as his contract enters its final year.
Lecce centre-back Tiago Gabriel, a Portugal Under-21 who arrived from Estrela Amadora last January, has 39 appearances and admirers at AC Milan, Bayern and Barcelona. Real Madrid’s Thiago Pitarch has 14 senior outings this season and is nearing the final 12 months of his deal.
Southampton’s Shea Charles, a Manchester City academy product, has more than 130 senior appearances after a loan with Sheffield Wednesday and could be available at the right price if the Saints fall short.
Girona wing-back Arnau Martinez, a Spain Under-21 and former La Masia prospect, is closing on 200 senior games and has been linked with AC Milan, Arsenal and Juventus.
