Sheffield Wednesday have just been hit with a 12-point deduction, but there could be further punishment on the way for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday may have only just been given a 12-point deduction for entering administration, but Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has warned there could be further punishment on the way for the club.

After months of financial turmoil, former Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri put the club and the company through which he owned the stadium into administration on Friday, which resulted in an immediate 12-point deduction for the South Yorkshire outfit.

That means the Owls currently sit bottom of the Championship table on minus six points, and they are a huge 16 points from safety, meaning relegation to League One is almost certain for Henrik Pedersen's side this season, particularly given their current poor form.

After losing a host of key players in the summer as their off-field crisis deepened, Wednesday have won just one of their first 12 league games this season, and they suffered their fourth consecutive defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Oxford United at Hillsborough on Saturday.

While Chansiri is no longer in control of the Owls, they will be dealing with the legacy of his mismanagement for some time to come, and after multiple late wage payments during the final months of his tenure, the club are unable to pay transfer fees for the next three windows.

That may not be the only sanction Wednesday face for their wage breaches, with Dorsett reporting earlier this month that a points deduction could be on the cards, while they are also under five separate transfer embargoes that will need to be resolved by the new ownership.

After Wednesday were hit with a 12-point deduction for entering administration, many assumed that would be the end of their punishment, but in a fresh update, Dorsett has revealed that they could still be given another points penalty for some of Chansiri's other indiscretions, although he stressed that any such sanction will be imposed this season.

"Sheffield Wednesday have a 12-point deduction, they are bottom of the Championship, they are looking pretty much stone guarantees for relegation to League One, so this isn't great news, we shouldn't stress it like that at all," Dorsett told Sky Sports.

"There are further problems on the horizon as well because it's been made clear to me that the EFL has a number of other breaches that it is prepared to sanction Sheffield Wednesday for that it hasn't brought action against yet.

"That could mean future points deductions for Sheffield Wednesday.

"Crucially, the EFL doesn't want to put a block or deter any would-be buyers for the football club, and so I think it's almost inevitable that if there are any more points deductions or punishments, they will come this season.

"Sheffield Wednesday will get all of their punishments and any further points deduction this season, so it won't drag on into future seasons.

"I think that's crucial for anybody buying the football club that they have that guarantee and hope that there's light at the end of the tunnel.

"Difficult times for Sheffield Wednesday for sure, but I think the EFL and the administrators now running the club are optimistic that there are brighter times ahead.

"There are plenty of people who see the assets that Sheffield Wednesday have and the history of the football club as a good option for potentially buying it right now."

Sheffield Wednesday fans will have mixed emotions after points deduction update

Pedersen and his players have performed admirably this season in the most challenging of circumstances, and after their uphill battle to avoid relegation was made even harder by the 12-point deduction they were given for going into administration, a further points penalty would make survival almost impossible.

It is difficult not to feel sympathy for Wednesday's players and staff, who have already experienced so much turmoil in recent months, and it is arguably unfair to give the club another points deduction as punishment for the actions of an owner who has now departed.

However, the most important thing for the Owls is that they start with a clean slate next season under new ownership, and with relegation almost inevitable, it makes sense for them to get all their punishments out of the way this campaign.
