Renee Slegers has confirmed that Leah Williamson has sustained another injury ahead of Arsenal’s FA Cup tie with Aston Villa, and delivered updates on Daphne van Domselaar and Chloe Kelly.

In a big blow to Arsenal, Slegers revealed that Williamson would not be available for the fourth-round tie after sustaining another injury.

The England star, who won the UEFA Women’s Champions League with Arsenal last season, had only recently returned from an ACL injury picked up in August. Luckily, she is not expected to be sidelined for long, as the issue is not with her knee.

“Leah unfortunately sustained an injury so she won’t be available,” Slegers said. “We are very hopeful that it’s not a big one. It’s not connected to the knee, so that’s positive; it’s an issue with her calf.”

Williamson played her first 90 minutes of the season in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United.

But in more positive news for the club, Kelly is “progressing well” and returned to the grass on Friday’s training session.

“She is on the pitch, so we’re taking it day by day,” admitted the coach. “We don’t have an exact date [for her return], there’s an optimistic plan and a more conservative plan, so we’ll see how she goes, but she’s making really good steps.”

Finally, Slegers also gave some good news about the return of keeper van Domeslaar, who is also progressing well in her recovery from a quad issue, and “might be back” as Meadow Park hosts Aston Villa.
