Arne Slot has said he is keen to give Liverpool a lift in energy with ‘one or two new players’ in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool are expected to invest in the summer after a quiet period in the transfer market since Slot’s arrival as manager. Virgil van Dijk this week hinted that the Reds will spend, suggesting it will be a ‘big summer’ for the club after he committed to a new contract.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with several targets, including Bournemouth duo Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez.

Slot refused to be drawn on transfer targets or the funds that will be available, but suggested he is keen to freshen up his squad with recruits.

“I think at Liverpool there is always a big summer, at a club like this, and it’s already a big summer now because maybe the players don’t follow everything in the media – me neither – but what I do know sitting here every time is that it was a big thing: ‘Can we hold on to them?’ And by holding on already to two [Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk], it’s already a big summer and let’s see what the rest of the summer will bring,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Leicester.

“But it would be strange for me now to say I am not happy with the team we are having because I have said this for a year. So, we are happy with the team we are having so maybe if we can even keep that team that would already be a big summer.”

Asked specifically whether he felt signings were required to improve, Slot said he would like to add new options if the right players are available.

“We showed the opposite last season because we didn’t change anything and I don’t think we went downwards. In general, I agree with you, but there is also a lot of study being done [in that] the longer a team plays together, the more success it has. The core of the team you want to keep together as long as you can as long as they are performing in the best possible way. It is also, in general, good to have some energy in and around the place with one or two new players, that I agree on.”
