Arne Slot has said he does not like the increasing reliance on set pieces in the Premier League.

Liverpool lead the division for set-piece goals scored since the turn of the new year, a marked improvement having ranked joint-bottom of the Premier League between the start of the campaign and December 31st.

The Reds scored from several set pieces in the club’s 5-2 win over West Ham at the weekend, with the importance of dead-ball situations in the Premier League perhaps more prominent than ever.

Arsenal lead the table and rankings for set-piece goals, scoring from two corners during the club’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday. The North Londoners have now equalled the record for goals from corners in a single Premier League season, with 16.

Speaking ahead of facing Wolves on Tuesday night, Slot acknowledged the importance of set pieces but said it is not a style that he appreciates.

“Do I like it? My football heart doesn’t like it,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

“When I think about football, I think about the Barcelona team 10-15 years ago. Now it is not as much a joy to watch but it is always competitive.”
