It’s not always what a manager says publicly that matters most, but what they’re saying behind the scenes, and Arne Slot has now given us a clear indication of where his mindset is during this difficult spell.

According to Paul Joyce writing for The Times, the Liverpool head coach remains fully confident he can change things, despite the growing noise around performances and results.

Slot’s private message shows belief remains strong

The report makes it clear that the Dutchman hasn’t lost faith, even as criticism has increased following recent results.

Joyce writes: “Slot is not known to doubt himself and he has told friends that he will turn it round.”

That line alone tells us everything about his mentality, because while results have dipped, internally there is still complete belief that this situation is temporary rather than structural.

We’ve seen signs of that in his work ethic too, with the 47-year-old continuing to be heavily involved on the training pitch alongside assistant Sipke Hulshoff.

The same report highlights how detailed his approach remains, noting that he has been reviewing performances intensely in search of solutions.

“He continues to be hands-on on the training pitch, along with his assistant Sipke Hulshoff, and will have spent time poring obsessively over every perceived mistake…”

Pressure growing but context still matters for Liverpool

That belief comes at a time when the mood around us has undeniably shifted, especially after the recent defeat to Brighton and the broader inconsistency we’ve seen in the league.

Joyce adds that Slot is fully aware of the external noise, including criticism of the team’s style.

“…but he cannot help but be aware of the mood changes, the jeers and will have been hurt by the branding of his team as ‘boring’.”

That reaction from supporters is understandable given expectations, but it also needs to be balanced with context, something that has been highlighted elsewhere when discussing his position.

Reports have already suggested there are ‘no current plans’ to replace the Liverpool boss, with injuries and wider circumstances playing a significant role in this season’s drop-off.

At the same time, there are voices suggesting the pressure could escalate if Champions League qualification isn’t secured, which shows just how fine the margins are right now.

What this latest insight tells us, though, is that internally there is no panic, and more importantly, no loss of belief.

Whether that confidence proves justified will be decided over the next few weeks, but for now, Slot’s message is clear: he backs himself to fix this.
