Liverpool approach the Merseyside derby with a rare sense of calm: no injuries clouding the build-up, no fitness concerns to temper anticipation. For Arne Slot, who has spent much of his opening months firefighting absences, that in itself feels like a small victory.
Curtis Jones is back in the Liverpool squad, confirmed by Slot on Friday, after missing the last two games with the knock he picked up against Arsenal before the international break.
The midfielder has endured a frustrating start to the season, making only one start so far. His return offers not just depth but a touch of continuity in a side still searching for rhythm under new management. “Back in the squad,” Slot noted, before stressing that the 23-year-old’s minutes may be carefully managed across the next week. A Carabao Cup clash with Southampton on Tuesday could provide the ideal stage for Jones to step back into the starting line-up.
Alexis Mac Allister also re-entered contention after shaking off the ankle issue sustained against Burnley. He managed 32 minutes in midweek, offering reassurance that he is ready to start again. With Jones available too, Liverpool’s midfield suddenly looks stocked with options—a stark contrast to the early weeks of the campaign.
Having 21 fit players at his disposal, Slot reflected with understated satisfaction: “I think all of them are fit now, and I think I can choose between 21 players. That’s quite normal [of a number], isn’t it?”
For Liverpool, such normality feels extraordinary. The derby against Everton, followed swiftly by cup and continental assignments, will test the squad’s balance and resilience. Yet the sight of Jones in red again, fit and eager, ensures they enter this run with renewed optimism.
