Spurs are in an even worse mess than Chelsea right now, and following the departure of Fabio Paratici, they’re deep in the search for a new sporting director.

According to an exclusive from the Daily Telegraph tonight, they’ve put Chelsea co-sporting director Paul Winstanley on their shortlist.

Chelsea director unlikely to leave despite fan unhappiness

Winstanley is not a popular figure among Chelsea fans, with many blaming him for some of the dreadful transfer business of the last few years. So of course this news has been met with some joy, and plenty of people on social media begging Spurs to take him.

Sadly, it doesn’t seem likely. As Law writes, Winstanley is contacted to Chelsea until 2031 after a fairly recent extension, and is “not expected to quit the Stamford Bridge club.”

It would be a slight promotion for Winstanley as he would be a sole director rather than sharing duties with Laurence Steward, although it doesn’t seem an advisable move for the former Brighton scout.

As the new contract last summer shows, Chelsea seem happy with the work that Stewart and Winstanley have done. If we miss out on the Champions League this season, that may change.

In other news…

Matt Law also wrote today that Chelsea are “making it clear” to their players that booking for dissent won’t be tolerated anymore.

Chelsea don’t have long to stew over their defeat – they’re back in action against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, and have some important players close to returning to action.
