Yesterday, it was reported by Sacha Tavolieri for Sky Sports that Bayern Munich were intent on pricing Florian Wirtz out of a move to the Etihad. Tavolieri reported that Bayern Munich were offering a mammoth contract to the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker. Furthermore, Tavolieri reported that Manchester City had reached a verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen over a transfer fee for Wirtz.
Last week, Christian Falk reported for CF Bayern Insider that Florian Wirtz had agreed to join Bayern Munich, either this summer or next summer. But to follow that, there has been a new report from Falk today that indicates that Wirtz is yet to decide on his next destination. Now, Christian Falk also reports City are intent on hijacking Bayern’s deal for Wirtz. Despite this, something smells off about the entire Florian Wirtz saga. Here is a breakdown of today’s latest news.
Christian Falk has reported for SPORT BILD that after Falk’s report that Wirtz had agreed on a move to Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen chiefs confronted Florian Wirtz’s father, Hans Wirtz. Hans Wirtz has reportedly assured Bayer Leverkusen officials that Florian Wirtz is yet to decide on a club. Furthermore, SPORT BILD reports that Florian Wirtz is willing to meet with other clubs over a potential move.
It is also included in Christian Falk’s new report that Manchester City are attempting to ‘hijack’ Bayern Munich’s move for Florian Wirtz. Furthermore, Falk reports that Bayer Leverkusen have received a concrete offer for Wirtz from Manchester City. Falk reports that Pep Guardiola has spoken to Florian Wirtz on several occasions. Guardiola views Wirtz as the ideal replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, as per the SPORT BILD report. Falk’s tweet, which can be found at the following link, also makes for interesting reading.
Putting Christian Falk’s report and Sacha Tavolieri’s reports together, it is clear that Manchester City aren’t out of the race to sign Wirtz. That’s obvious. In fact, it now seems that City are in the race up to their eyeballs. But the race is becoming murky. In fact, something smells about the whole affair.
How can Manchester City hijack a move that hasn’t been agreed to? That’s the first question. As the SPORT BILD report indicates, Wirtz is yet to agree on his next move. So City can’t be hijacking Bayern’s move. That fact becomes more apparent when you look at Sacha Tavolieri’s report from yesterday. Tavolieri reported that Bayern were playing the ‘game’ via the German media. Perhaps that is what is unfolding. Bayern are using the media to sway the decision of Florian Wirtz. Maybe they aren’t. But two plus two does equal four, even in the murky world of football transfers. It does seem that Bayern are making their pitch publicly to sign Wirtz.
Who knows where Florian Wirtz will end up this summer. He could stay at Bayer Leverkusen, or sign for Manchester City or Bayern Munich. All possibilities are in play. But something seems off about the entire saga. Perhaps it’s as simple as Bayern Munich not having their man as reports suggested last week.
