Saying goodbye is never easy, especially not for a player who has left his mark on RB Leipzig in the way that Timo Werner has. "We achieved a great deal during this time, which is why leaving here is so emotional, especially closing that chapter as a player forever," Werner said in his final interview as an RB Leipzig player. Hearing him speak, it's clear to see that these aren't just words for the striker – they're coming straight from the heart.
The 29-year-old departs as our club's all-time record goalscorer, having netted 113 goals and provided 47 assists in 216 competitive games. These figures aren't just testament to his contributions as a player, but also to the deep connection formed between the striker and the club since his arrival in summer 2016.
"I'm proud of what I've achieved here, but also what I've achieved with the team and with the guys, and can only look back positively on that time," he shared.
While looking back over his time at RBL, Timo lists the club's first-ever Champions League match as one memory that will stay with him forever. The Red Bulls had qualified for Europe's premier cup competition in their debut top-flight campaign – a remarkable achievement for both the club and its players. "I don't think anyone thought that we would achieve that so quickly," he recalls.
A few seasons later, the Champions League was once again the site of another memorable moment in the club's history: their first appearance in the semi-finals of the competition. The 29-year-old watched that match from his living room, having moved to Chelsea FC prior to the 2020/21 season.
Finally, he lists the DFB-Pokal win in 2023 as another unforgettable moment at RBL, especially due to the close friendships that had formed within the squad. "We didn't just win the cup as a club, but together as friends. That made it even better," he shared.

Leaving as the club's record goalscorer is an achievement that Timo is naturally very proud of, while the striker is also aware that records are meant to be broken. When that moment comes, the striker unselfishly declared that he wouldn't be upset – the opposite, in fact.
"The moment that happens, I'll be happy for whoever does it and I'll also be happy for the club," he said. "Because it would mean that RB Leipzig have a striker who has performed very, very well over a long period of time, and the club have managed to keep him."
He added, "There's always a time where you have to make way for others."
As the interview starts to wind to a close, Timo takes the time to speak about his connection to the fans and to the city of Leipzig, a place where he always felt at home. "I was very happy to play in front of the people here in Leipzig, to be part of this city and this club. Even in the end, when I wasn't playing anymore, they were still thinking of me," he shared.
As he departs Leipzig to start a new chapter elsewhere, Timo hopes that this deep connection with the fans will carry over to other players. "I hope that what they did for me, they will now do for the current and future players here," he said.
One chapter might be closing, but one thing is certain: Timo Werner will forever remain unforgotten at RB Leipzig, having made his mark on the pitch, in the city and in countless memories for our club.
