Southampton boss Tonda Eckert said he was very surprised by reports that Caspar Jander is unhappy off the pitch and that a return to Germany is more likely after a strong start at St Mary’s.

Sky reports that RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart and Ajax are interested, while Bild claims the midfielder is unhappy in his personal life and describes a summer move as very likely, adding that his girlfriend, boxer Carlotta Schünemann, lives in Germany. Bild also notes his deal runs to 2028 and that FC Nürnberg hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause.

Speaking before Sunday’s trip to Fulham, Eckert said: “I had somebody send me the article when it came out, and I was very surprised. I can say 200 per cent that it doesn't come from Caspar.”

He added that Southampton are very happy with Jander and that the player is happy at the club, praising his development this season. Eckert said heavy minutes in a first Championship year are demanding and that missing family at times, especially at Christmas, is normal. He stressed Jander is fully committed to the team and the campaign.

Jander has impressed since joining from FC Nürnberg in the summer, with suggestions his value has doubled. Despite the outside interest and homesickness claims, his future remains open and will be shaped by the coming months.
