A Southampton fan has pointed out a very interesting observation involving David Moyes potentially replacing Russell Martin - The odds have been slashed!
Southampton are believed to be in the process of replacing Russell Martin. It has only been a few days since he was exiled as Southampton boss, with Simon Rusk taking the hot-seat on an interim basis.
On the day after Russell Martin was fired by Southampton, the odds for his replacement were revealed and the top three likeliest candidates were believed to be Danny Rohl, Carlos Corberan and David Moyes... In that order.
Well, there has been some movement in that order... At least from one betting company.
As pointed out by a Southampton fan on Reddit, David Moyes has been listed as the second likeliest manager to take charge at Southampton. The post, which was made on Thursday 19 December at 1:25pm GMT, showed David Moyes's odds being slashed to 11/4, making him the second leading candidate on Sky Bet.
* Betting odds, like always, are subject to change
What's interesting is that on Sky Bet, Carlos Corberan is not even within the top three managers. Instead, it is Kasper Hjulmand who takes third spot on there.
We would be remiss if we didn't mention that odds from a betting company should be taken with a pinch of salt. They are certainly not the be-all or end-all and they could be based on false claims. Yet, it is an interesting trend to see the odds on Moyes slash so suddenly.
Without a doubt, Southampton fans would not turn up their nose at the appointment of David Moyes. He is a manager with a proven track record in the Premier League. He knows what it takes to steer a sinking ship to safety, which might be exactly what Southampton need.
Of course, an ideal situation would allow for Southampton to appoint someone on a longer-term basis. However, this situation is far from ideal, so the Saints are in no position to be greedy.
In fact, appointing David Moyes might actually make the most logical sense to Southampton. Even if he is only a short-term hire until the end of the season, where both parties can analyse whether a longer-term deal is appropriate.
It feels like a long-shot for Southampton to aim for safety from relegation. Currently, they are at the foot of the Premier League and they are not playing good enough football to warrant a push for safety.
