Southampton host Man City in a Premier League showdown on Saturday, May 10th, at 3pm (UK time).
Manchester City are enjoying a strong run, suffering only one defeat in their last 12 outings across all competitions. Defensively, they’ve shown notable improvement, recording five clean sheets in their last seven games—most recently in a 1-0 victory over a resurgent Wolves side.
Their back line should be confident heading into Saturday’s clash with Southampton, who have struggled badly in front of goal. The Saints have scored a league-low 25 goals this season and mustered just two shots on target in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester.
Kevin De Bruyne has scored in his last three league appearances against Southampton. After an injury-disrupted season, De Bruyne appears to be finding form right at the end of his Man City career, scoring twice in his last four appearances, both as the opening goal scorer. With Erling Haaland sidelined, De Bruyne has taken on a more advanced role, which could increase his attacking threat. He’ll be one to watch at St Mary’s on Saturday, where he looks well-positioned to make an early impact.
Southampton were the first of the promoted sides to be relegated from the Premier League when they suffered a 3-1 loss at Tottenham on matchday 31, and things haven’t been any better, with the Saints picking up a single point (1-1 at West Ham) from their subsequent four outings. Last time out , they suffered a 2-0 loss to Leicester, and they are now preparing for life in the Championship next season.
Having lost their grip on the Premier League crown, Manchester City’s focus is now on securing one of the spots that guarantees a place in next season’s Champions League, including fifth place. Pep Guardiola’s men occupy third spot, one point ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle. Third place would equal City’s worst finish under Guardiola, which came in his first campaign, 2016-17. City’s last non-top-four placement came in 2009-10, when they ended up in fifth under Roberto Mancini. This was two seasons before their first Premier League title win.
There is no return date for Charlie Taylor and Paul Onuachu, while Albert Grønbæk should have recovered from his Achilles issue.
Nathan Aké should return for City in late May, meaning he and Rodri are the only players unavailable to Guardiola for this showdown. Ederson, Erling Haaland, and John Stones are expected to be part of the dethroned champions’ squad.
Southampton have won just one of their nine previous meetings with Manchester City, but that was in a League Cup match. City are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League encounters (five wins and two draws).
