Southampton make the long trip to Manchester United in the Premier League this evening.
The Saints are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and have won just six points since promotion. It’s the worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign after 20 games with Southampton heading towards record-breaking territory. Goals have been a huge issue, with just 12 scored so far this season.
The weekend offered encouragement as Ivan Juric secured his first win as head coach at the sixth attempt. Tyler Dibling scored twice as Southampton eased into the FA Cup’s fourth round with a 3-0 win over second-tier Swansea.
Next up is a trip to Manchester United, who have won just once in their last seven league games. However, the Red Devils are in optimistic mood after encouraging performances at Liverpool and Arsenal in recent weeks. Ruben Amorim’s side eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup last weekend, beating the North Londoners on penalties despite Diogo Dalot’s red card.
Ivan Juric is hopeful that Flynn Downes will be available this evening after a thigh issue, while Matheus Fernandes is back after serving a one-game ban.
Jack Stephens, Ross Stewart and Juan Larios all remain unavailable, though there’s better news on Will Smallbone and Gavin Bazunu. The former returned from injury at Swansea, while Bazunu stepped up his recovery from an Achilles injury with the u-21 side last week.
Southampton predicted XI: Ramsdale; Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek, Wood; Bree, Ugochukwu, Fernandes, Walker-Peters; Dibling, Archer, Sulemana.
Manchester United host Southampton in the Premier League on Thursday 16th January 2025. Kick-off at Old Trafford is 20:00 GMT.
In the UK, the game will be televised live on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate.
