Southampton are winless in their last seven Championship matches under Tonda Eckert. Recruitment is under scrutiny in his first window.
He impressed as caretaker after Will Still’s sacking, winning four of five to land the role permanently. Results have since turned. He has previously only worked transfer windows as an assistant at Genoa and Barnsley.
The window’s sole addition is Daniel Peretz, on loan from Bayern Munich. He debuted in a 3-2 win over Doncaster Rovers, then featured in the 2-1 loss to Hull City in his first Championship match.
Damion Downs returned to Bundesliga Two on loan with Hamburger SV, a move viewed as embarrassing for the Saints given the £7 million spent to sign him from FC Koln. Gavin Bazuna joined Stoke City on loan with opportunities limited, while Ronnie Edwards completed a permanent move to Queens Park Rangers after a loan spell.
"We shouldn't take any desperate decisions. There are still a few days and I am sure we will make something happen," he told the Southern Daily Echo.
The Saints have been linked with Notts County’s Tyrese Hall, though at 20 he remains unproven at Championship level. An additional centre-back has been mooted, with Roggerio Nyakossi of OH Leuven and Santiago Ramos Mingo of Bahia mentioned.
Sunderland back-up goalkeeper Anthony Patterson was also linked, but a move now appears unlikely. Joe Arribo could depart and return to former club Rangers.
