Spanish national team star Unai Simón secured for himself a special piece of history on the international stage on Thursday.
This came owing to his exploits in the colours of La Roja in the country’s World Cup clash with Austria.
Luis de la Fuente’s troops marked their return to action a short time ago, eyeing a place in the competition’s Last-16 in a meeting with European rivals Austria.
The aforementioned Simón featured from the off in the fixture, taking his place between the posts for the 4th fixture running at the tournament.
And en route to an eventual 3-0 triumph, the Athletic Club standout, as alluded to above, etched his name indellibly into the history books of world football.
As revealed by Spanish statistician Mister Chip on ‘X’:
‘Unai Simón reaches 518 minutes without conceding and sets the LONGEST streak of clean sheets for a goalkeeper in the ENTIRE history of the World Cup.’
Simón has broken the benchmark previously held by iconic Italian shot-stopper Walter Zenga.
