Tottenham Hotspur made a bold statement at the Etihad, defeating Manchester City 0-2 and extending their perfect start under Thomas Frank. This was no fluke. Spurs were disciplined, clinical, and resilient, building on last season’s emphatic 4-0 win at the same venue to claim another major scalp.
Manchester City dominated the early exchanges, with Omar Marmoush setting the tone by almost capitalising on Pedro Porro’s loose header. His low effort trickled wide, and soon after, Guglielmo Vicario was called into action to push away a thunderous strike from distance. Marmoush, lively throughout the opening period, forced another sharp stop after Erling Haaland played him through.
Despite the pressure, Spurs remained patient and struck with precision. Their first genuine attack saw Richarlison break into space before delivering a perfectly weighted low cross for Brennan Johnson to finish. Initially ruled out for offside, VAR intervened and awarded the goal, swinging momentum firmly in Tottenham’s favour.
City’s night worsened as a defensive lapse gifted Spurs their second. With seven minutes added on due to Rayan Aït-Nouri’s injury, James Trafford misplayed a pass inside his own penalty area. Joao Palhinha pounced, rifling the ball home with authority to make it 0-2 before half-time. It capped a difficult spell for the young goalkeeper, who had already been fortunate to escape a red card for a collision with Mohammed Kudus earlier in the half.
Erling Haaland spurned a golden chance to pull one back before the interval, heading over from close range. That miss epitomised City’s frustrations as they failed to convert sustained possession into goals.
The second half followed a familiar pattern, with City probing and Tottenham absorbing pressure. Spurs’ shape was compact, their transitions swift, and their resolve unwavering. Two games into the new season, Frank’s side boasts back-to-back victories and consecutive clean sheets, underlining a promising new era for the North London club.
City, meanwhile, were left searching for answers. Haaland’s misfires, coupled with uncharacteristic errors at the back, left Pep Guardiola’s side trailing early in the title race. For Tottenham, this was more than three points. It was a performance that showcased tactical maturity and efficiency in both boxes.
