Spurs may have hit a stumbling block in their efforts to sign Crystal Palace supremo Eberechi Eze in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a move for the 27-year-old as they look to significantly bolster Thomas Frank’s options in midfield and add depth to a squad that is missing James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski through injury.
Arsenal have also been linked with Eze, who played a key role in the Eagles’ FA Cup and Community Shield wins this year.
However, Spurs are leading the race for the playmaker’s signature after multiple reports claim they began discussions over a potential deal with Palace on Saturday evening.
The north London outfit were said to be closing in on a move for Eze, who had reached an agreement to sit out their opening game of the new Premier League season against Chelsea on Sunday.
At the time of writing a formal bid had not been submitted, but personal terms are not believed to be an issue after Eze told Palace of his desire to join Spurs in recent weeks.
Negotiations, though, do not appear to be going as smoothly as Tottenham would have hoped, with Miguel Delaney reporting that talks have “become difficult” over the course of the evening.
The proposed deal was said to involve an initial transfer fee of £55 million plus add-ons, which is well below the £68 million release clause in his contract that reportedly expired on Friday.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to move on to other transfer targets in the final two weeks of the window.
Marc Guehi has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, although Palace manager Oliver Glasner said in Friday’s pre-match press conference that he expected both players to be involved against Chelsea.
“Marc has trained the entire week with us, every single training session, the same with Ebs,” the German coach said of the pair. “They’ve prepared the best way for the Chelsea game on Sunday afternoon.
“I’ve been in the football business for too long, so I know that at any time of any day, things can happen. If you ask me now, I expect both Marc and Ebs to start on Sunday.”
