The latest surrounding Burnley's managerial search and whether Steven Gerrard will be the man for the job

Burnley are likely to be the final Championship club to confirm their new manager ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, as the Clarets look to secure yet another immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

With Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers announcing the return of Tony Mowbray on Friday, only Watford and Burnley are without men in the dugout ahead of pre-season. The Hornets look set to appoint Alessio Dionisi, though, and it can't be long before the Clarets have their man, too.

But will that new manager be former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has been out of work since leaving Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq in January 2025? His last managerial role in England at Aston Villa ended close to four years ago now, following a year of mixed results.

Gerrard has been linked with the Burnley job for over a month now, even being touted for a move before Scott Parker left the club in late April.

Further reports in the wake of Parker's departure stated that the Clarets held multiple talks with the 46-year-old over the role, but that was over a month ago now, and no announcement has been made surrounding who will be in charge at Turf Moor come August.

Here's the latest surrounding the Burnley managerial search.

Journalist Alan Nixon reported to his Patreon on Sunday that Burnley were ready to close in on a managerial appointment at the end of the week, which perhaps gave Clarets fans some relief as they continue to wait in anticipation over who will succeed Scott Parker in the dugout.

However, according to the Burnley Express, sources at Turf Moor have played down the possibility that someone could be announced this week, confirming that the process is still "ongoing."

With the success of the Clarets over their last two ventures into the Championship, collecting 100 points over both campaigns under Vincent Kompany and then Parker two seasons ago, there'll be plenty of pressure on the new manager to replicate that in 2026/27.

The Express went on to state that Burnley are still willing to take time over an appointment, with the onus first on reforming the organisational structure of the club behind the scenes. Former Aston Villa director of football, Monchi, has confirmed he will have involvement with the Clarets after he was appointed the new sporting director at sister club Espanyol.

But, there is hope that, if not this week, a new man will be in post this month, with Burnley set to return for pre-season on June 29, and numerous decisions will have to be taken regarding the future of the current playing squad before then.

Alan Nixon did confirm, though, that Burnley are working through a ten-man shortlist to decide who their new manager will be.

Gerrard is among those still expected to be part of that shortlist, while the likes of Cardiff City manager Brian Barry-Murphy, Derby County boss John Eustace, and Robbie Keane are known to be admired by the former Premier League side.

Additionally, a lesser-known continental candidate due to the potential influence of Monchi has also been mooted, according to the Express, so they're not short of options when it comes to who they feel is best suited to replace Parker in the dugout.

Gerrard's situation as an out-of-work manager would surely give him a boost ahead of some of the other candidates, whose clubs will be reluctant to let them go.

Plus, the Championship has recently offered a place for another former English midfield legend who arguably underwhelmed in the Premier League as a manager to work on his craft and bring a team to the top flight in the process. Perhaps the former Liverpool man would be keen to follow in Frank Lampard's footsteps.

Either way, we're no closer to finding out the identity of the new Burnley boss, and with numerous names in the hat, it really could be a case of letting things play out while the higher-ups at Turf Moor make their decision.
