In football, seasons, momentum and periods of form evolve quickly. The modern game moves at such a relentless pace that circumstances can change in an instant, for countless reasons both on and off the pitch. Yet four years after AC Milan's 2022 Scudetto celebrations, the midfield trio that helped deliver the Club's 19th Serie A title continues to dominate headlines, with their futures still generating widespread discussion across newspapers, outlets and social media. Sandro Tonali has completed a high-profile move to Tottenham, Franck Kessie has become a free agent following the expiry of his contract with Al-Ahli Saudi FC, where he had played since August 2023, while Ismaël Bennacer has concluded his loan spell at Dinamo Zagreb as his next chapter begins to take shape.
Of the three midfielders who featured prominently during AC Milan's 2021/22 title-winning campaign, only Kessie appeared at the FIFA World Cup. The Côte d'Ivoire international started all four matches, featuring in victories over Ecuador and Curaçao as well as defeats to Germany and Norway. Back home, there is still anticipation over whether the midfielder will continue his international career with Côte d'Ivoire, which creates further buzz around "the President" - as he was known during his time in Milanello - alongside his considerable transfer speculation. Tonali, meanwhile, is set to work under Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham. As an AC Milan player, the Italy international faced Spurs in the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League Round of 16. De Zerbi also has his own Rossoneri connection, having joined AC Milan's Youth Sector as a 16-year-old in 1995. Bennacer, for his part, has recently developed a connection to Fali Ramadani's Lian Sports Group as he prepares for the next stage of his career.
