The Superior Tribunal de Justiça has set Palmeiras’ special appeal in its Samsung sponsorship dispute for seven April at 14:00 before the Third Panel, according to Nosso Palestra.
In June 2010, Palmeiras notified Samsung it would terminate a deal that ran until the end of 2011 and return to FIAT. In the second half of that year, the company sued the club over the rupture.
In 2021, a first-instance ruling ordered the club to pay R$ 17.25 million for unilateral termination, breach of confidentiality and indirect moral damages. After a second-instance appeal, the figure was cut to R$ 12.5 million and the moral damages were removed.
With interest and monetary correction, the claim totalled about R$ 71 million by February 2024.
Palmeiras has challenged the São Paulo Court of Justice ruling via a special appeal to the STJ in Brasília. The club said it would not comment at this time.
Early in 2024, president Leila Pereira said the case stems from an administration long before Maurício Galiotte’s and stressed the need for care and responsibility so Palmeiras is not harmed.
