The STJD has eased sanctions on Corinthians after an appeal, trimming bans for Hugo Souza to one match and Matheuzinho to two, and converting a home-game ban into a one-match closure of the Oeste Inferior stand. The racism fine was upheld.
According to Meu Timao, the original verdict delivered last Friday had imposed the loss of a home match and a R$ 80,000 fine under article 243-G after a racist insult by supporters towards Palmeiras goalkeeper Carlos Miguel. The club was also fined R$ 10,000 under article 213 for disorder and security failings after a drone carrying a plush pig entered the stadium and a kite line halted play.
Corinthians argued it cannot control stadium airspace, highlighted its record on racial equality, and said collective punishment was disproportionate. The appeal also sought to cut suspensions for Hugo Souza, cited under article 243-F for offending the match officials, and Matheuzinho, cited under article 254-A for physical aggression against Flaco López.
There was disagreement on the panel, with rapporteur Rodrigo Aiache Cordeiro urging only a reduction for Hugo Souza, calling the original ban excessive. The plenary ultimately lifted the R$ 10,000 sanction and reduced the player bans to one and two matches.
Hugo Souza and Matheuzinho should miss the Vasco match on Sunday at Neo Química Arena. The Oeste Inferior will be closed for the Majestoso on 10 May, as tickets for the Vasco game had already gone on sale.
