On Saturday, Gipuzkoa experiences a first cup final with fans as Real Sociedad supporters descend on Sevilla and La Cartuja with families. According to Diario Vasco, long-told tales of 1987 could soon become first-hand memories for younger generations.
On 27 June 1987, La Romareda turned blue and white as more than 20,000 travelled. Real drew 2-2 with Atlético after extra time, then captain Luis Arconada saved Quique Ramos in the shootout to clinch a second Copa for John Toshack’s side.
Friends Pedro Soroeta, 65, and Iñaki Elizalde, 63, are back this weekend with their daughters. They remember caravans of flag-festooned cars and a time before replica shirts, when fans wore scarves and anything white and blue.
Soroeta drove south on Wednesday, staying in a lent flat until Sunday, and hopes the return journey is heavier. Elizalde, a veteran of Gijón 1981 and Madrid 1988, says sharing Sevilla with family tops the lot.
He recalls Zaragoza’s oppressive heat, and with Sevilla forecast at 33 degrees he expects a warm, respectful mood. Inside La Romareda it was bedlam, with cans flying after Txiki Begiristain briefly made it 2-1.
Many will finally attend a final with public after 2021’s closed-doors win over Athletic Bilbao. Tickets have stung, far from the 800 pesetas of 1987, yet plans are set and celebrations mapped, Oyarzabal’s lift strictly a hope.
