RC Strasbourg Alsace manager Liam Rosenior has apologised for comments made in the wake of Malick Fofana’s injury over the weekend.

Fofana, the victim of the challenge, left the field on a stretcher, but his side ultimately prevailed thanks to a last-gasp winner for Olympique Lyonnais (2-1).

Liam Rosenior didn’t agree with the decision to send off Doukouré. “It (the red card) isn’t deserved. It perhaps isn’t your opinion, but it is mine. The referee judged the injury, not the action. The card should never be red, it should be yellow,” said the Strasbourg manager.

Fofana left the pitch on a stretcher, loaded onto the back of a buggy. The Belgian, as confirmed by Lyon, has avoided a fracture but has suffered ligament damage that will likely require surgery. OL have said that he will miss several months, with L’Équipe specifying a three-month absence.

Following the diagnosis, Rosenior has rowed back on the comments that he made post-match. “We all make errors. I reacted in the moment. I was wrong about the red card,” began the Englishman. “I apologise and I hope that Malick Fofana will recover quickly.”

Lyon will be without Fofana until the end of the calendar year, and following his red card, Doukouré is now set for a period of suspension.
