Striker for Corinthians' Brasileirão rivals out due to contract clause

This Sunday (8th), at 4 PM (Brasília time), Corinthians will host Ceará at the Neo Química Arena for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship. However, the Ceará team will be without its main scorer in the competition: forward Pedro Raul, who has scored ten goals in the tournament.

The 29-year-old player belongs to Corinthians and is on loan to Ceará until the end of 2025. According to the contract, the northeastern black-and-white team would need to pay a fine — the amount of which was not disclosed — to be able to field the striker against the club that owns his rights. After the classic against Fortaleza, the forward confirmed he will be out of the game and reiterated his goal of continuing to improve his numbers this season.

“This weekend, unfortunately, I won't play, but I'll be cheering for my teammates and recovering. I want more (goals), I'm not satisfied with ten. I want to score as many as I can and finish the year in the best way, with the best possible numbers”, said Pedro Raul in an interview with Premiere.

In the first round, the Ceará management considered paying the fine to have the striker, but gave up on the idea. Thus, Pedro Raul also missed the 1-0 defeat to Corinthians at Castelão on July 16th.

Loaned since the beginning of the season, the player has a contract with Timão until December 31, 2028. Even playing for another club, Corinthians still covers about 50% of the player's salary.

Pedro Raul's stint with the São Paulo team was modest — only four goals in 39 matches. At Ceará, however, the forward has found his form again: 16 goals in 42 games, including the header that secured the Ceará state championship in the 1-1 draw with Fortaleza. More recently, he also scored in another 1-1 draw with the rival, this time in the Brasileirão.

Curiously, if he were still playing for Corinthians, Pedro Raul would be the team's top scorer in the championship, as Yuri Alberto leads with eight goals. In the season's total, the forward also has the edge: he has 17 goals (16 for Ceará and one for Timão), compared to 16 for Yuri Alberto.

The loan contract includes a purchase option for Ceará at the end of the term, but the club has not yet decided whether it will exercise the clause. Otherwise, Pedro Raul will return to Corinthians in January.
