Chelsea are getting busy in the Club World Cup in the USA right now, but that won’t stop a flurry of activity at Cobham, where there’s a lot of work to be done.

The focus remains on signing new players, of course. A new left winger and a new central defender appear to be priorities. But in terms of the volume of moves, there are going to be far more outgoing than incoming.

Gilchrist another pure profit starlet ready for the market

Fabrizio Romano on Alfie Gilchrist’s potential departure.

One of the Blues most likely to go is Alfie Gilchrist, who had a nice season on loan with Sheffield United after a solid season as a backup for the Blues under Mauricio Pochettino.

Fabrizio Romano has just put out a Tweet which confirms that the defender “will leave Chelsea on a permanent deal this summer,” and adds that “there’s strong interest from the Championship, with several options being considered.”

Gilchrist still on a Premier League trajectory after promising start to career

Still young and with plenty of experience for his age as well as the potential to get better, we expect a really solid fee for Gilchrist, who without doubt has Premier League potential in the long term.

One of the sides pushing for promotion this season is likely to take an interest in him, and it’s just a matter of seeing where he thinks he has the best path to success.

It’s hard to know what to expect in terms of a fee, but if it was much less than £10m we would be disappointed. TransferMarkt have him valued at €8m, and you usually get more than their estimate.

If it was down to us, we’d take a smaller fee and a large sell on, as we can see him being worth a lot more in a couple of years.
