Strong winds on Saturday devastated the long-standing canopy by the canteen at Javier Marquina, home of San Pedro in the Grau de Castellón. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, it was blown across the site and smashed into the first-team pitch fencing, causing damage but, with the ground empty, no injuries.
Club members were taken aback, as conditions did not seem especially extreme at the time. The tent, in place for nearly 20 years, wrecked at least five fence panels that now need removing.
One of the striking images was the lighting tower, its access ladder bent inwards by the impact, and the club has asked for it to be taken down for safety. On Monday two municipal workers cleaned the area and a crane lifted the debris away to the scrapyard.
Workers said it could have been a tragedy had anyone been present, adding that the metalwork would have offered little protection. Maintenance lead José Defez was similarly shocked, saying they had not expected it because the wind did not seem that strong, and he expressed relief it happened during Magdalena.
San Pedro president José Antonio Ferreres visited the ground and underlined that, despite the spectacle, the damage was only material. Part of the awning had already been weakened during the red wind alert in Castellón on 14 January, and it finally gave way.
After the clear-up, eight-a-side and eleven-a-side teams, including the amateurs, trained as usual on Monday, and normality will resume on Tuesday.
