Stuart Harvey has been appointed technical director at Stoke City, his first role since leaving Sunderland.

The club said in a statement that Harvey will support a broad spectrum of football operations, covering first team coaching and recruitment, research and analytics, football administration, medical and performance, the women’s first team, and the boys’ and girls’ academies. He will report to sporting director Jonathan Walters, who praised his reputation and presented the appointment as a sign of Stoke’s ambition to strengthen and build a platform for success on the pitch.

His remit at Stoke is wider than the position he previously held on Wearside.

Harvey joined Sunderland in the months after Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’s takeover and became a key figure in the climb from League One to the Premier League.

He left the club earlier this season as director of football Florent Ghisolfi overhauled the recruitment operation, and now arrives at the bet365 Stadium to begin his new role.
