After their disappointing Europa League exit on Thursday evening, VfB Stuttgart professionals were all in agreement about one thing: Porto keeper Diogo Costa is simply phenomenal. Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß, VfB keeper Alexander Nübel, squad captain Atakan Karazor, and newly recalled German national team striker Deniz Undav all praised the 42-times-capped Portuguese international in their post match comments.
“We had good chances and plenty shots on target,” Hoeneß told RTL+ after the match. “But you just have to tip your hat to the opposing goalkeeper, who was simply the absolute best player on the pitch today.“
“He [Costa] [played outstandingly,” Karazor added in the mixed zone. “We have had some bad luck at the back. The [1-0] was just bad luck. That happens once out of a hundred times.“
“It hurts a lot because we played well in both games,” Nübel said in front of the assembled reporters. “Today, he [Costa] completely outdid himself on his best day.“
“He did an incredible job,” Undaz said. “He also made saves on shots that didn’t necessarily need to be saved. He’s not just brutal on the line. The balls he plays, the composure he has when playing balls out is just amazing.
“He was definitely the MVP of both games,” Undav concluded.
