Jamal Musiala delivered exactly the performance that many fans and experts had been hoping for in the German national team’s World Cup opener. In the commanding 7-1 victory over Curaçao, the Bayern star showed significant improvement, scored a goal himself, and was one of the most prominent players on the field. However, his early substitution caused a brief moment of concern.

Jamal Musiala was the center of attention ahead of the World Cup. Following his long injury layoff and some mixed performances in the warm-up matches, there was intense debate over whether the 23-year-old was already back to 100 percent.

Against Curaçao, the attacking midfielder showed why national team coach Julian Nagelsmann had started him from the beginning despite all the discussions.

Musiala stepped up his game after the break

As usual, Musiala was actively involved in Germany’s attacking play from the very first minute. In the first half, he still lacked that final bit of precision in some of his moves, and on several occasions his dribbles were thwarted by opponents.

After the break, however, the Bayern pro was significantly more effective. Right after the restart, Musiala made his mark. Following a brilliant assist from his Munich teammate Joshua Kimmich, he scored with a precise low shot to make it 4-1, rewarding himself for his committed performance.

The goal likely did the attacking star a world of good. After all, Nagelsmann had emphasized before the tournament that Musiala still needed match rhythm to get back to his absolute best form.

A scare in the second half

Despite his strong performance, the Bayern star’s day ended earlier than planned. Even during the match, it was noticeable that Musiala was repeatedly grabbing his thigh. In the 64th minute, it was finally over. The national team player was substituted and disappeared into the locker room immediately after being taken off.

Given his injury history, the scene immediately caused concern among German fans and at FC Bayern.

After the game, however, national team coach Julian Nagelsmann was quick to allay those concerns. The 38-year-old made it clear that the substitution was purely a precautionary measure. No one need fear a serious setback. It was “normal” and “nothing serious,” Nagelsmann explained after the match.

This means Musiala should also be available for the German national team’s upcoming matches.

An important sign for Germany and Bayern

In addition to the decisive victory, Musiala’s improved performance stands out as one of the positive takeaways from the World Cup opener. The Bayern star appeared significantly more dynamic than in the pre-tournament friendlies, consistently sought out one-on-one duels, and rewarded himself with a goal.

This is important news for Germany. After all, Musiala is one of those players who can turn a game around at any moment with his creativity.

His performance will also have been closely watched at Säbener Straße. There, the hope is that Musiala will finally return to his best form during the World Cup.

The opener against Curaçao could have been the first important step toward that.
