Sudanese clubs Al Hilal Omdurman, Al Ahli SC Wad Madani and Al-Merriekh have received the greenlight to participate in the Rwandan Premier League for the 2025/26 season.

This comes after the three clubs applied to play in Rwanda due to the ongoing civil unrest in Sudan, which ultimately put football action to a halt since April 2023.

Al Hilal and Al-Merriekh played their league matches in the Mauritania Super D1 last season, with the former reigning supreme ahead of Mauritanian giants FC Nouadhibou.

Initial reports indicated that Al-Merriekh are set to feature in the Libyan Premier League this campaign but they are yet to kick the ball in North Africa.

Foot Africa can confirm the three clubs will play their domestic matches in Rwanda after the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) accepted their request to join the league.

Sources have indicated the Rwandan Premier League executives have already drafted a revised schedule to accommodate the Sudanese clubs.

This will be a major boost, particularly for Al Hilal, who are set to host Kenyan Police in Kigali for the second leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Friday, 24 October.

The war in Sudan also forced the national team to host their Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) and 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Libya and Tanzania.
