Sunderland have issued an update to supporters after 65 tickets for the recent Tyne-Wear derby were cancelled and relisted.
The club said in a statement that investigations uncovered an exceptional case of ticket misuse, involving unauthorised use of supporter accounts and tickets being used by people other than the eligible purchaser. It added this accounted for more than 50% of some group purchases, those involved acknowledged the misuse, and action has been taken.
Sunderland acknowledged some fans were affected through no fault of their own and accepted the disappointment caused. It will work with the ticketing supporter subgroup to review and improve processes, aiming to ensure away tickets are allocated fairly to genuine supporters.
Supporter group Red and White Army raised concerns and sought clarity following the cancellations, and later shared the club’s update.
Separately, the group thanked Chief Business Officer David Bruce as he prepares to leave the club this summer. Non-executive director Tom Burwell is acting as interim CEO, with a permanent appointment expected this summer.
