Sunderland AFC supporters are being urged to join a minute’s applause in the 26th minute during tonight’s match against Liverpool at the Stadium of Light to honour super-fan George Forster, who has died aged 99.

According to Sunderland Echo, the tribute will take place on minute 26 to reflect his birth year, 1926, with his photograph displayed on the big screens.

Forster passed away on Tuesday, 3 February. He had followed the Black Cats since 1934 and was among the few remaining supporters who saw Sunderland crowned champions at Roker Park in 1936.

Even in his centenary year he continued to attend matches at the Stadium of Light, including the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in January 2025.

He chaired the Sunderland AFC Supporters Association for 55 years until 2021. Applause usually takes place on the minute matching a person’s age, which is not feasible at 99.

Following his passing, the club paid tribute, describing him as red and white to the core and one of the most cherished figures in the fanbase.
