QPR have been encouraged to continue their reported pursuit of Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson amid fierce competition from a number of Championship rivals.

The Rs have enjoyed a quietly successful season thus far and find themselves just three points shy of the play-offs after 21 matches.

Julien Stephan’s side didn’t start the campaign brilliantly, picking up just one point in their first three outings. This run of form included a 7-1 battering at the hands of Coventry City, which led to pressure starting to mount on QPR’s new boss.

However, they have turned things around since then and have spent some time hovering just outside or even sneaking into the top six, though consistency has been something of an issue at Loftus Road.

Rangers have won four of their previous six encounters and are now supposedly looking to the January transfer market to boost their play-off hopes.

According to journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon, Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson could be set for a temporary move away from the Stadium of Light in January.

The 25-year-old featured extensively for the Black Cats during their time and promotion out of the Championship but has had to play second fiddle to Robin Roefs this term, which could lead to a potential exit.

Nixon states that QPR hold a “big interest” in the goalkeeper’s services, but they are not alone in that stance.

Leicester City and Southampton are both rumoured to be monitoring the situation closely, providing stiff competition for Rangers.

When queried on a potential transfer for Patterson, Football League World’s QPR fan pundit, Louis Moir, believes it is a deal the Rs should look to complete without hesitation, as it could provide them with a huge edge in the play-off fight.

“Anthony Patterson is a top, top keeper,” stated Louis “He would be a bit of a mega signing, getting someone like him in on loan.

“I think we can beat off teams to signings as we've shown. There were bigger clubs interested in Richard Kone. There were certainly bigger clubs interested in Kwame Poku in the summer as well.

“We managed to sign them both. I think we're a much more attractive proposition now. I think we've been like that for a fair little while and I would not be surprised if we could beat off these teams to signings like Patterson.

“It would just make us so much better overall, to have someone like that in there who is so commanding and just so much better than what we've got. It would make a massive difference because, obviously, our goalkeeper situation has done us in a lot this season.

“If you get someone of Patterson's standard in, then that is a big, big signing and could be what we've been missing, which could potentially propel us into the play-off positions.”

Although QPR have managed to beat other teams to players such as Poku and Kone in recent times, they could struggle to win out in this scenario.

Southampton and Leicester City are both sides that have recently been in the Premier League, presenting potentially more attractive destinations to Patterson.

The Foxes’ financial situation may not be ideal, but Southampton could better any package QPR put together and arguably have a better chance of fighting for promotion.

Therefore, although the shot-stopper would be a superb capture for Rangers, they may struggle to compete with other teams in the hunt for his signature.
