In a recent report, Tuttomercatoweb stated that Sunderland are among the clubs hoping to land Celtic midfielder Arne Engels this summer. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats would have to rival Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Napoli in the race to sign the Belgian talent this summer.

Engels’ Impressive Form In Scottish Football

The 22-year-old managed to shine at times with his performances at the heart of Celtic’s midfield last season when he put in a series of impressive displays for the Hoops in the Scottish Premiership. Engels made 46 appearances for the Glaswegian outfit in the previous campaign, scoring seven times and securing eight assists in the process across all fronts.

The Belgian sensation is currently among the best central midfielders in the Scottish Premiership. Hence, it is no wonder that the Black Cats are in the running to sign him this off-season.

His current contract at Celtic Park will run out in the summer of 2028, which could make it tough for Sunderland to land him on the cheap later this year.

Will Engels Be A Good Option For Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris?

Engels loves a tackle and can earn possession back for his team inside his half He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can chip in by scoring and creating a handful of important goals for his side.

The Belgian talent is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play as a right-sided wide player or as a right-back if told to do so. However, it remains to be seen whether he can adapt to the physical style and high intensity of the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to get him on board this summer.

We can expect Engels to add more quality and depth to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ midfield. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular starting place at the Stadium of Light in the coming years.

At 22, the future looks quite bright for Engels as long as he continues to improve with each season. All in all, he would be a decent option for the Wearside club to consider in this summer transfer window. However, Le Bris has to give him some time to prove his worth in the Premier League.
