Sunderland beat Chelsea 2-1 to seal a historic return to Europe, and the Stadium of Light revelled in a day to treasure. Sunderland Echo highlights that its photographers captured the colour and celebrations throughout.

The home support was in full voice long before kick-off as Régis Le Bris’ side chased the result they needed.

Trai Hume set the tone with a crisp first-time volley. After the break, Malo Gusto’s own goal made it two.

Cole Palmer pulled one back for Chelsea, but after Wesley Fofana was sent off, Sunderland held firm and full-time brought unforgettable scenes.

The victory secured European football for the first time in 53 years, with the Black Cats finishing seventh in the Premier League only one year after promotion via the Championship play-offs. It caps a remarkable rise for a club that was in League One just four years ago.
