Sunderland clinch seventh and Europa League place on final day at the Stadium of Light | OneFootball

Sunderland concluded their first campaign back in the Premier League by finishing seventh, securing the second Europa League spot on the final day.

According to Sunderland Echo, they faced Chelsea at the Stadium of Light with both clubs aiming to book European football for next season.

For Sunderland to qualify, victory over Chelsea was essential, a draw would not suffice given their inferior goal difference to Brentford.

Qualification routes were clear. Conference League football would follow if Brentford failed to beat Liverpool at Anfield, or if Brentford won and Brighton lost at home to Manchester United.

The Europa League would be achieved if Brentford did not beat Liverpool and Brighton were beaten by Manchester United.

At full time it was confirmed that Sunderland had met the conditions to finish seventh and claim a Europa League place.
