Sunderland ‘in talks’ with Jose Fonte over coaching role under Régis Le Bris | OneFootball

Sunderland are in talks with former Portugal international Jose Fonte, formerly of West Ham, about joining Régis Le Bris’ coaching staff.

The Sun first reported the approach, and discussions are progressing, although nothing has been finalised.

Fonte retired in May after 882 senior appearances and winning the European Championship with Portugal in 2016. The 42-year-old would add significant Premier League and international experience if a deal is struck.

Le Bris’ squad returned for pre-season at the Academy of Light on Thursday, but Fonte was not in attendance.

In England he is best known for seven years at Southampton, helping the club climb from League One to the Premier League. He joined from Crystal Palace in 2010 and made almost 300 appearances for the Saints.

Fonte is preparing for the next stage of his career in coaching and Sunderland are exploring whether terms can be agreed. No appointment has been confirmed.
