Italian reports say Sunderland have made an enquiry for Óscar Mingueza as he prepares to leave Celta Vigo on a free. The La Liga club said in a statement on Tuesday that he is among those departing this summer.
The same report added that Atalanta and Como have also moved early.
Mingueza, 27, came through Barcelona’s academy and has four Spain caps. A regular for Celta since 2022, he is primarily a right back but can operate at left back and centre back.
Sunderland want to strengthen their defence after Dennis Cirkin’s exit and with Lutsharel Geertruida’s future unresolved. Talks continue over bringing him back permanently, but the option to buy was not triggered and, with other interest likely, a return is uncertain.
He made 34 La Liga appearances last season and 11 in the Europa League. He has been linked with Aston Villa and Newcastle United, and Sky Sports reported last month that his preference this summer was a move to the Premier League.
