In a recent post on X, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka wants to join Chelsea this summer. It has been mentioned that the Blues are hoping to sign the Swiss talent from the Black Cats in this transfer window.
The 33-year-old had a solid campaign at the Wearside club recently as he was responsible for putting in a string of influential displays for them at the centre of the park. Xhaka scored one goal and earned six assists in 36 matches for the Black Cats last season across all fronts.
The Swiss talent is currently among the most experienced central midfielders in the Premier League. Hence, it is no wonder that Chelsea are showing interest in recruiting him this off-season.
Xhaka’s current contract at the Stadium of Light will run out in the summer of 2028, so Regis Le Bris is under no immediate pressure to cash in on him unless he receives a fair offer for his services.

Xhaka loves a tackle and can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and is a tidy passer of the ball as well from midfield.
The Swiss sensation can even chip in by creating a few important goals for his team going forward. Xhaka is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so by his manager. He has got a wealth of experience in the Premier League and remains one of the first names in Sunderland’s teamsheet.
Hence, Xhaka’s desire to join Chelsea would come as a big blow for Regis Le Bris this summer. He was one of the Wearside club’s best players last season.
At 33, Xhaka might still have a couple of good years left in him. However, it is only fair to the player if Sunderland allow him to leave, but only if they receive a decent offer for him in this transfer period.
